KISMA Preserve Wildlife Endangered Species

Wildlife and Endangered Species

The North American section of the preserve houses animals that are generally native to Maine, with a few exceptions from other regions. Some of these were originally wild and could not be released because of injury, behavior or legal restrictions. Throughout the year we receive a wide variety of local wild life in crisis which are treated, released or transferred to a facility specializing in that particular species.

Our North American species include Moose, Wolf, Coyote, Black Bear, Raven, Vulture, Owl, White Tailed Deer, Alligator, Fox, Raccoon and others.

KISMA Preserve Big Cat Species

BIG CATS

The Cat area includes animals with many histories. There are pampered retirees from show business, a "pet" lion from a yacht, and placements from zoos. These fascinating and beautiful animals are the least suited to private ownership and the least likely to find a stable home when an owner, for whatever reason, has to place their animal. These include some of the top predators on the planet, and some of the most endangered.

Our Big Cat species include Siberian and Bengal Tiger, Leopard Lion, Cougar, Bobcat, Lynx and Tigon

KISMA Preserve Rain Forest and Tropical animals

RAIN FOREST AND TROPICAL

The Rainforest area houses animals native to tropical climates. They arrive here as abandoned or relinquished pets. Some have been confiscated from illegal or improper facilities. A few are retirees from show business. Others are retired or participants from National breeding programs. We are very pleased to be part of the Golden Lion Tamarin Species Survival plan since 1992. These are a highly endangered species and very few facilities have the privilege. The goal of this international cooperative effort is to build a genetically diverse population in captivity in conjunction with preserving sufficient habitat in the native country of Brazil. Select individuals are then sent to Brazil and released to rebuild a stable, healthy wild population.

Our Rain Forest and Tropical species include Serval, Colobus Monkey, Gibbon, Ring-tailed Lemur, Fish, Capuchin Monkey, Snakes, Common Marmoset, Tortoises, Spot Nose Guenon, Caiman, Alligator, Prehensile-tailed Porcupine, Invertebrates, Parrots, Golden Lion Tamarin.
